My Monologue "St. Patrick & The Ouroboros" was recently shortlisted for The Walter Swan Playwriting Award... here's what The Judges had to say...

“When reading ‘St Patrick and the Ouroboros’ the judges were particularly impressed by your ability to build dramatic tension within a monologue. Patrick’s narrative unfolds with real energy, building the momentum towards a gripping climax. You gain real immediacy from focussing on his personal account, while simultaneously mediating on history and the cyclical nature of violence.

Patrick is an engaging protagonist: complex, surprising and authentic. His relationship with Gorka convincingly alters his world view, and he gradually gains the audience’s sympathy – while retaining a strong element of menace that feeds the tension. Even the silent supporting characters feel real; you clearly have a gift for creating nuanced characters driven by compelling motivations.

The judges also commented on your poetic use of language, whose rhythmic quality lends the modern day story an epic quality that reinforces the sense of tragedy without becoming sentimental. Additionally, your use of Irish dialect usefully heightens the sense of character and place. It aids the flow of dialogue, rather than distracting from it – something that many writers struggle to pull off."
